Ekpeyong Ita, Director-General, SSS |
The State Security Service (SSS), also known by the cover name, The Department of State Services, is the primary domestic intelligence agency of Nigeria. It is mainly responsible for the gathering of intelligence within the country and for the protection of designated government functionaries, sensitive installations and visiting foreign dignitaries. SSS is constitutionally empowered to reduce Nigerians vulnerability to the act of terrorism, providing needed internal peace and security for the people of Nigeria.
The counterterrorism approach the agency is yielding results despite all the challenges of confidence among Nigerians based on human right records of the organization.
The agency has recorded success in the area of defeating terrorism through arrest, locating terrorist sanctuaries in Nigeria and gradually, destroying their ability to plan and operate. The department recently announced the arrest of Boko Haram’s spokesperson in the Northern Nigeria. The agency has made several arrests in the past and the prosecutions are ongoing.
We hope the agency will continue in the area of creating domain awareness by providing meaningful up-to-date and coordinated threat information to the public.
It is important for Nigerians to appreciate the efforts of the SSS officials in order to encourage the officers of other security agencies to work hard in order to achieve the goal of the Nigerian President National Security Strategy against Terrorism.
